About the Penn Libraries

The Penn Libraries provides a network of information resources and knowledge services that are vital to teaching, research, and learning at the University of Pennsylvania. This network includes 19 physical libraries, recognized for their collections, and a digital library known for innovation and richness of content. Through dynamic programming and exhibitions, and through the acquisition and preservation of literary and artistic artifacts, the Penn Libraries documents a wealth of social and historical periods, bringing scholarship to life at the University and in the various communities it serves.

The Position

The Penn Libraries seeks an energetic, service-oriented person, with strong research, management and relationship-building skills for the position of Head, Veterinary Medicine Libraries.

This position leads the operations and services of the Steven W. Atwood Library on Penn's main campus and the Jean Austin du Pont Library at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA. The Head supervises, directly or indirectly, one FTE professional staff, one FTE support staff, one FTE shared support staff with the Levy Dental Library, as well as interns and student assistants.

The Head provides curriculum-integrated instruction and in-depth research consultations and serve on teams within the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Veterinary Libraries support research, education, and clinical care for the School of Veterinary Medicine, two veterinary hospitals, and research departments.

The Veterinary Libraries are part of the Penn Libraries system. The Head works with colleagues across the system to identify creative and collaborative opportunities in service and resource delivery. In particular, the Head, Veterinary Libraries partners with colleagues in the Dental Library and the Holman Biotech Commons as part of the Health Sciences Libraries cluster.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the operations, facilities and staff of the Penn Veterinary Libraries, including supervision of 3 FTE professional and support staff, interns, and students.
  • Provide outreach, reference, and instruction services to faculty, clinicians, researchers, staff and students of the Penn School of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Develop and update documentation, web resources and promotional content.
  • Collaborate with Penn Vet faculty and administrators on projects and administrative groups. Report on activities to Vet School and Library administration.
  • Compile and evaluate library service and activity measures to inform budget planning, space design, and resource allocation.
  • Perform collection development in the veterinary sciences including budget management, and selection of resources in collaboration with the coordinating bibliographer for Health Sciences.
  • Partner with colleagues across Penn Libraries for collaborative services.
  • Participate on and contribute to library wide committees and work groups
  • Perform additional duties as assigned




Qualifications


Required:

    • Master's in information and/or Library Science from an ALA-accredited program - OR - the equivalent in related fields and practice such as veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, the life sciences, public health, or similar.
    • 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic sciences library - OR - relevant healthcare or academic setting.
    • Strong service orientation and commitment to providing a welcoming environment to all seeking library support.
    • Demonstrated supervisory experience or training.
    • Strong collaborative, interpersonal, and communication skills.
    • Willingness to learn new skills and technologies for professional growth.

    Preferred:
    • Coursework or experience in the health or life sciences or related field.
    • Knowledge of latest trends and tools for teaching, research, and scholarly communication.
    • Demonstrated experience and/or training in systematic reviews
    • Familiarity with IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) protocols
    • AHIP (Academy of Health Information Professionals) certification.
